According to statistics, about 18%~30% of cell lines are cross-contaminated or misidentified, and the use of these cells may lead to incorrect research conclusions, unrepeatable results, and disastrous consequences of clinical cell therapy, etc. Since 2009, the NIH and ATCC have called on researchers to identify cells for STR identification and set about building cell STR databases. Nowadays, STR identification of cells has become the gold standard for identifying cell identity and cross-contamination. Most authoritative journals also require authors to provide proof of cell STR identification when submitting papers. It is clearly stipulated in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia that new cell lines/strains, cell banks and production end cells should be identified as native cells by differential tests, and there is no cross-contamination of other cells.
